Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Saturday and Sunday…..
White Nights...4am in Iceland
4:30am Saturday morning we left our hotel in Reyjkavik for our 7:40 flight to Amsterdam……along with about 10 other flights. I think they do all their flights coming and going really early in the morning!! The flight was only 3 hours so just dozed a bit. We made our way to train ticket sales counter, bought our ticket to Sneek (the train leaves every hour), had some lunch and headed for the train platform….all in the same building…..I love it!
There's a cache right there! |
The train trip to Sneek takes nearly 3 hours (one short..5 minute train change at Leeuwarden)…..we got here about 5pm.
The house is about a 5 minute walk from the train station….a three bedroom duplex with a nice back yard on a quiet cobble stoned street. Gretta and Klaas had warned us about the front door….neither of us could make it work. We ended up going to the neighbour, her daughter who was visiting helped us get it open. Yeah! We will figure it out….
After we dropped our luggage, we went in search of a grocery store to stock up for the next few days. Sneek looks like really cute town. And went to bed at about 9:00pm when it was still light so I still haven’t seen night for about a week!!!
I woke up about 9am ….I think I am finally on a decent schedule. We puttered around here until about noon, Carol was anxious to try driving the car in the area….so we toured around the town….looked for a couple of caches and found a quilt store that was closed so will go tomorrow. She is doing a great job of driving the stick shift….it’s all coming back to her she says.
This is a very picturesque town….just like you would imagine Dutch town to be….canals, boat, bikes and shops lining the streets and canals. A beautiful old bridge Watersport about the centre of town. We are learning how to use the parking metres and read all the signs

Big boats... |
Little boats...the drawbridge is very busy! |
Gretha’s parents came over in the evening to check how we were doing and to see we knew that it was garbage day on Mondays(tomorrow), they stayed for a while chatting and then had to leave because there was a soccer game on. The last time I was in Europe 2012 the World Cup was going on…in Warsaw and in Kiev…. every town I visited was decorated with country colours and big screen TV’s in the city squares, oh and every person too! Things aren’t as wild in Sneek…coloured flags and clothes, when we get to Amsterdam on Wednesday it will probably be all dressed up…. especially when Holland plays that day too!!! Soccer Fever!!!
Sunday night I finally saw darkness…I went to bed at 11:00pm!
