Exploring

Tuesday

The day dawned with a mix of sun and clouds, but warm enough for capris and sandals.  we had to return to one of the caches from yesterday so planned a route to begin at that point and continue east to a National Park area.

With the cache completed, we ventured east with Earnewald as our first stop as there was a quilt store and a cache nearby. We did find the cache, but were unable to read the  "hint" explaining what to do ...there was a a lock attached to a rope in a tree.  It was a pleasant drive through the hay fields and grazing sheep and cattle.  Earnewald was a very cute smallish town on a waterway adjacent to the national park.
After several loops around what we thought was the main street, we parked and asked directions only to find the shop at the opposite end of the street.  Then, we discovered it was not open on Tuesdays.  This is a boating resort town and as with many of the smaller areas, stores close on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.  But it looked like a popular vacation spot for trailers with big add on tents and people with their houseboats.  We did enjoy the walk around the marina area before heading off back toward Sneek.
I love poppies!
Closed!
Tents are as big as the attached trailer!

A cache in Oude Aldegea, took us to a very quaint town where bikes were prevalent.  A bench beside a canal in a housing neighbourhood, offered a quiet, serene place to enjoy our lunch.

Again, we tried to avoid the freeways as much as possible.  Our little Suzuki drives well, but with the speed limit, 130kmph, it begins to shake and rattle.  We were on the A7 which is the freeway to Amsterdam and has a lot of truck traffic.  But...no one drives in the left land except to pass, and they almost cut you off coming back into the right lane!!  The smaller roads provide more interesting landmarks and opportunities to stop.

Each time we return to Sneek, it is by a different route.  Because of the ring roads around the canals, the options are limited and we are always amazed when we recognize a landmark.  I love road trips!

Tonight is time to pack for our trip to Amsterdam, before joining our tour on Sunday.
